Guide:

Choosing the right kart tyre for my kart

Kart tyres have a decisive influence on grip, handling, and lap times. To find the right tyres for your kart, you should consider several factors before purchasing.
The intended use and your personal requirements are key here.

In summary:

  • Maximum grip = soft (PRIME) kart tyre = short service life = advanced setup knowledge required

  • Long service life = hard (OPTION) kart tyre = long service life = basic knowledge is sufficient

FAQ

Which kart tyres are suitable for beginners?

For beginners, we recommend harder compounds (OPTION) with a wide operating temperature window. They are forgiving, react predictably, and tolerate setup mistakes well.

How many laps does a set of tyres last?

This depends heavily on the compound, the track, and the driving style.

With the correct setup, PRIME tyres can last between 70 and 80 laps. Hard tyres (OPTION) can last even longer. With an incorrect setup, however, they may be worn out after as little as 30 laps—for example, due to an incorrect chassis setup and a lack of grip on the track.

Why does the tyre lose air overnight?

Kart tyres are manufactured with relatively thin sidewalls. Due to the low wall thickness, a small amount of air can slowly escape over time. This is normal and not a cause for concern.

Three of the most common mistakes we constantly see in the paddock

  • When mounting or dismounting tyres, the locking screws in the go kart wheels are not removed. If this happens during dismounting, the wheel is damaged; if the screws are forgotten during mounting, the tyre will be destroyed.

  • Incorrect tyre pressure. Just a few laps with the wrong pressure are enough to permanently damage a tyre. The optimal hot pressure depends on various factors such as tyre compound, track conditions, total weight, and engine configuration. A guideline for PRIME tyres is between 0.8 and 0.85 bar.

  • Incorrect storage of tyres between sessions. Tyres stored between races or practice sessions in a transporter, trailer, or truck that is parked outdoors lose performance quickly due to changing temperatures and sunlight. Tyres should be stored in a dark place at cool temperatures.
